Few trends boast the staying power ofminimalism.Minimalist fashionisn’t just a passing fad—it represents an entire sartorial mindset. Minimalism is about paring down your closet to its basics, creating a capsule wardrobe full of essentials and pairing those go-to’s every which way until you have a whole host of easyoutfitsat your disposal. It’s fashion in its most efficient form: Your closet is there to complimentyou, not to make a statement.
Our collective affinity for minimalism hit full swing several years ago and it has remained unendingly strong ever since. I mean, I don’t think I’ll ever have too many pairs offresh white sneakersin my wardrobe! And white T-shirts? They’re essential! Though maximalism has become popular in the street style and home decor spheres, it hasn’t thwarted minimalism’s overwhelming appeal. I willnevernot be down to style a few neutrals into a sleek, versatile ‘fit.
The issue is that appreciatingminimalist fashionand integrating it into your day-to-day routine are two very, verydifferent things. The latter actually requires effort! You have to Kondo the hell out of your closet, build that aforementioned capsule wardrobe and then come up with enoughcombinations to carry you through. Andjustwhen you think you’ve achieved the perfect low-key outfit situation, something—some event, some inspo pic, something—will make you realize youtotallyneglected to stock up on some basic pieces that are essential in your pared-down wardrobe.
The best way to figure out what you need to shop for? Determining what you actuallywantto wear. And the easiest way to makethathappen is to check out all theminimalist outfit inspiration you can get your hands on, which is exactly why I’ve assembled a visual guide to all of the best minimalist fashion outfits I’veeverlaid eyes on, courtesy of the ever-so-trendy fashion street style set. Read on to check out a few of our fashion editors’ favorite ‘fits.
A Blazer and a Mini Skirt
“The key to making a minimalist outfit interesting is to add texture. The combination of a classic blazer and a white T-shirt is a relatively basic outfit—the knit mini skirt is what elevates this look.” – Olivia Marcus, Fashion Writer
An Almost-Neutral Trench
“If you gravitate towards neutral tones, you probably already have a minimalist sense of style. Go slightly beyond your comfort zone and opt for an almost neutral piece. This soft green/yellow trench is the perfect example and will give your look a little flair.” – Olivia Marcus, Fashion Writer
A Structured Trouser and Sweater
“This may be a controversial opinion, but you should be able to wear white all-year round! These white slacks add gorgeous structure to this simple outfit and would work in the summer or even winter (I love a winter white! Sue me!).” – Olivia Marcus, Fashion Writer
A Subtle Accessory Moment
“Accessories will always be my go-to when working with a simple outfit. By simply changing the accessories out, you can transform your look. This photo is a great example because the silk neck scarf creates a Parisian feel, especially when paired with the classy sheer tights and pointed toes shoes.” – Olivia Marcus, Fashion Writer
A Dramatic Jacket and Jeans
“Once colder temperatures hit, you’ll find me wearing an ankle-length coat until May returns. The silhouette is timeless, sophisticated, and a little bit dramatic. You can’t go wrong layering it over an easy sweater and jeans.” – Olivia Marcus, Fashion Writer
A Tone-on-Tone Look
“A monochrome or tone-on-tone look is a go-to move for minimalist dressers. This photo shows a beautiful combination of grey and chocolate brown tones, creating an urban and earthy look. If you’re out of outfit ideas, try combining similar colors in your closet—you might be surprised by how many new looks you can create!” – Olivia Marcus, Fashion Writer
Layers on Layers
“I love this street-style outfit photo because it highlights a look that seems like it would be obvious to put together, and yet I’ve never considered it! The pairing of a white T-shirt under a button-down with white jeans looks crisp and polished. This is a simple outfit but the attention to detail makes it spectacular!” – Olivia Marcus, Fashion Writer
Cropped Hoodie and Jeans
“This diva Grece Ghanem has been one of the stars of Copenhagen street style. This look is amazing. A simple cropped red hoodie and baggy straight-leg jeans.” – Aamina Khan, Trending Style Writer
Bare Shoulder Black Tops
“I’m seeing shoulders everywhere these days. I feel like If I don’t get an off-the-shoulder top in my wardrobe by yesterday I’ll go insane.” – Aamina Khan, Trending Style Writer
Business Casual Sequins and Sneakers
“Minimalism has a reputation for being serious, but that’s not fair. This outfit features a silver sequin midi skirt and sneakers, and it’s both very fun and dead serious.” – Aamina Khan, Trending Style Writer
A-Line Coat Dress and Black Pumps
“The Row is famously one of those brands that might look unassuming, but a stan can spot a garment right away. I became a little obsessed with the large A-line trench coats they put out recently. That paired with these exposed toe pumps from Dries Van Noten, oh I’m obsessed.” – Aamina Khan, Trending Style Writer
