What Is Whole 30?
If you haven’t heard of Whole 30, here’s a summary: Whole 30 is a 30-day reset program to help you curb cravings and bad eating habits, boost metabolism, heal your digestive tract, and calm your immune system. It focuses primarily on temporarily eliminating problematic foods from your diet, even things generally considered healthy, but may be having a negative mental or physical impact on your body.
The foods that are eliminated from your diet were chosen based on scientific literature and clinical experience and were deemed most likely to cause problems for cravings, metabolism, digestion, and the immune system.
So what’s eliminated from your diet for Whole 30?
- No real or artificial added sugar
- No alcohol
- No grains
- No legumes
- No dairy
- No carrageenan or sulfites

They also encourage people on the Whole 30 program to not try to recreate junk foods and desserts — you’re trying to break the habit of relying on food to satisfy cravings so you don’t want to try to find a substitute; you’ll just continue the cycle.
They also ask that you not take measurements or step on the scale during the 30 day program. Your weight naturally fluctuates so you don’t want to use weight or measurements as something to encourage or discourage you from your progress.
What can you eat on Whole 30? Well, pretty much everything else. But it should be real food:
- Meat & Poultry
- Seafood
- Eggs
- Vegetables
- Fruit
- Natural, healthy fats
- Herbs, spices, & seasonings

Why Should You Try Whole 30?
Whole 30 has somewhat of a cult following. People who do it often fall in love with the new food freedom lifestyle. The founder of Whole 30 started it as an experiment with a friend to improve eating habits, but soon realized the many benefits that came with this new style of eating.
Many of the foods we eat contribute to allergies, inflammation, obesity, sleep difficulties, skin issues, poor immune function, digestion problems, and more. If you suffer from any of these things, you may want to consider giving Whole 30 a try. I’ve personally completed the Whole 30 program twice over the past several years, and I switch to it for a few days any time I need to “reset” or feel better.
Many people who initially hear about Whole 30 may think of it as a diet or weight loss program, but that’s not what it is intended to be. It’s a food lifestyle to improve overall health and wellness without gimmicks.
Whole 30 Benefits
What are some of the benefits of completing the Whole 30 program? There are many. Personally, my sleep improved significantly, my energy levels increased, my skin improved, and yes, I lost weight. Here are a few things that other people have experienced:
- Reduced joint pain
- Improved digestion (get rid of or reduce acid reflux, bloating, heartburn, gas)
- Acne may improve
- Rashes and skin conditions may improve from elimination of allergenic foods
- Improved allergies and sinus issues
- Reduction of chronic pain
- Controlled blood sugar
- Lower blood pressure
- Improved mood
- Reduction of anxiety
- Improved focus and productivity
We’re not getting anything in exchange for writing about Whole 30, just sharing the information for those of you who may want to give it a try if you haven’t already. And as someone who has completed the program, and still uses what I learned from it in my cooking on a regular basis, I can say that I feel great when I’m on Whole 30, and I hope everyone has the opportunity to feel good as well. If you don’t? Why not give it a shot.
Whole 30 Foods
One of the cool things about Whole 30’s following is that many companies have been adding products to the market that are Whole 30 compliant, and clearly marking the packaging so that you can shop in your regular store and find products to help you with your Whole 30. In the beginning, there was a lot of making things yourself — mayo, salad dressing, sauces, etc. Now you can find all that and more, premade and ready to go so you can Whole 30 without the additional prep time.
