Pediatric dentistry has witnessed remarkable advancements in recent years, ushering in a new era of innovative strategies that prioritize the oral health and well-being of our youngest smiles. These new approaches reflect a commitment to creating positive and enjoyable experiences for children at the dentist, setting the stage for a lifetime of good oral hygiene. One key strategy involves the incorporation of different technologies to diagnose, treat, engage and educate young patients. Interactive games and child-friendly apps are designed to make dental visits fun and educational, helping children understand the importance of proper oral care. This not only eases anxiety but also instills good habits from an early age, ensuring a foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles.Furthermore, the development of minimally invasive techniques has transformed the landscape of pediatric dentistry. Gone are the days of traditional, intimidating procedures. Modern advancements allow for less invasive treatments, reducing discomfort and promoting quicker recovery times. This approach is not only gentler on the child but also encourages a positive association with dental care.

When should I change my child’s toothbrush?Daily: Let your toothbrush air dry● Most to the bad bacteria in the mouth are anaerobic, so simply lettingthe brush air dry (no cap on) in light will get rid of these germs.Weekly● Clean brush weekly with hydrogen peroxide or alcohol mouthwash, then rinse brush and allow to air dry. When sick (until brush is replaced):● After each use up until first 2-3 days on antibiotics, soak brush head inhydrogen peroxide or alcohol mouthwash then rinse with water and airdry.● Once major illness symptoms have resolved, you should toss the oldbrush and introduce a new one. When to throw brush away?● Replace toothbrushes every season, or approximately every threemonths.● If your child becomes sick or bristles become damaged (i.e. splayingfrom chewing), you should replace sooner! Some tips:● Avoid storing family members’ brushes in close proximity to eachother.● Wipe paste off tube dispenser with a clean finger then transfer to brushhea brother than wiping directly onto bristles to avoid crosscontamination.

Tooth Abscesses: What are they and what do Ido if I see one on my child?Leave a Comment/Beauty Corner/ Byadmin-bhsWhat is an abscess?● It is a sign of an infection from a buildup of pus. In children, it is usually located on the gumsabove the affected tooth. It may or may not be accompanied by pain or swelling.● Abscesses in baby teeth can affect the development of permanent teeth growing underneath thebaby tooth and lead to discoloration, weakness, or mottling of the adult tooth.● An untreated abscess can lead to spread of infection to other parts of the body, and may even belife-threatening.How do abscesses occur?● Typically, these occur as a result of previous injury to the tooth, untreated cavities, an infection, orfailing dental work. It is important to note that an abscess will not go away on its own and theaffected tooth may need to be removed. What to look for?● After trauma, the tooth that received the impact may change color to gray, brown, yellow, or evenpink. This alone is not a sign of infection, and the color change may actually go away afterseveral weeks to months..● Always keep an eye out for a bump to appear on the gums after a dental injury and let yourdentist know as soon as possible if you see anything abnormal.Treatment options:● An x-ray is usually required to properly diagnose an abscess on a tooth, as it can help identify theextent and location of the infection.● Removal of the tooth (extraction) or nerve treatment of the affected tooth may be necessarydepending on the extent of damage to the tooth structure, nerve, and surrounding tissue andbone.● Either this may be done with your child’s pediatric dentist, or the dentist may refer your child to aspecialist depending on the situation.Misconceptions:● A common misconception is that abscesses will go away on their own since they can drain like apimple, but the affected tooth needs to be addressed by a dental professional as soon aspossible.Prevention is key!● Practicing good oral hygiene, having regular dental check-ups, and using mouthguards for sportscan prevent abscesses from forming in the first place.Original source: American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry
